My wife has had a rough time of late, from almost drowning on my birthday (which still gives her nightmares) to being abandoned by people that are important to her. Sometimes it feels as if I'm the only one who is there for her even if I can't always show it in the way I want to.
She tries to help and support people when she can, especially if she cares about them. It is rare however that that support is reciprocated in any meaningful way. She got something back yesterday, something that she didn't ask for. It brought her to tears that someone would actually do that for her. She deserves everyone doing that for her, not just someone who remembers every now and then.
I think what I'm trying to say here is that she is a better person than anyone else I know. Too many people have come in to her life and left if that should have treated her better. I want to surround her with people that will treat her with the respect and love she deserves. That includes me.

My day has been like this
We are getting down to the end of the latest release of code we have been developing. This means it is a flurry of last minute bug fixing and making sure everything works. This means a lot of people are bothering me about their issue while I'm trying to triage and assign bugs as they come in. I need something like the following I think.

Glut of games again
Every year, in the run up to the end of the year and Christmas, most of the biggest games of the year come out. This year is no different so in no particular order here are all the games coming out in the next 3 months I'm looking forward to:-
As for the aforementioned Lego post, it is coming, I'm just compiling a list of all the Lego I've done recently and it is surprisingly large. As in adding up all the pieces I used and it gets in to the thousands and thousands of pieces of Lego to build the sets I've made. Kind of cool in its own way.
- The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
- Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception
- Assassin's Creed: Revelations
- Batman: Arkham City
- Resistance 3
- Saints Row: The Third
- Rage

Boring videogame post
I've not written about games for a while since it is the quiet period in the summer when not many new games come out at all. I did get a couple of older games for my birthday, Killzone 3 and Two worlds 2 both games which came out earlier this year but didn't get a chance to try back then.
Killzone is quite an improvement over it's predecessor which I also played, especially visually. There was a trailer released several years ago that was a "target render" but was advertised as gameplay. It looked bloody good. Killzone 2 came close to that but Killzone 3 is pretty much that. The effects they use to build the visuals really show off what can be achieved with the "current" technology even at limited screen resolutions. As for the gameplay it is very satisfying as far as a FPS goes. Only a couple of annoying sections on the normal difficulty level so a run through at the hardest level may be required. I just wish they could get some characters that are less generic and annoying "dude bro" type guys for this type of game.
Two world 2 is something I wanted to try since it has all sorts of interesting and fun mechanisms in the game even if the actual implementation of the game is a little glitchy. Nothing game breaking so far but the odd visual glitch or audio cutting short during conversations. The game itself though runs and plays well and the stuff I have done so far shows that it could take quite a while to go through which is always a good thing. I plan to play this game a fair bit more over the coming weeks before the glut of games that always comes out at the end of the year starts.
So there we go, boring game updated done. Now you can all wait for the exciting Lego update about all the Lego I've been building recently.

My wife
Just time for a quick post today with work being busy today. Had a nice date out with my wife last night trying out a local restaurant that we hadn't been to before. It is kind of tucked away in a strip mall and is an unlikely place for a restaurant of its kind but it was quiet, good service and nice food. I love you dear.

I like cake
Cake is good, I don't think you will find many people who disagree with that statement. As one of the many cool things my wife got me for my birthday a custom made cake was one of them. It was a brilliant one of me laying in bed with our four cats around me playing and generally making mischief of themselves. Even better was that is wasn't completely coated in yucky sickly butter cream icing but proper fondant icing.
It was a pretty large cake as well and ever since then we have been eating our way through it. So far we've consumed a decent portion of the main bed and some of the headboard. The fondant me and cats have been saved to be kept (we couldn't eat our cats!). All in all a very very very brilliant cake.
Oh, one more note. It is interesting how very strong food colouring comes out of you colour wise.

Evil evil games
I played a game last year that ended up being so stressful and harrowing while playing it I actually stopped playing it and didn't finish it. For me that is rare, when I start a game I will finish it (unless it has game breaking bugs like Far Cry 2), something to do with the completionist in me I think. The game I didn't finish though is Demons Souls, a game that at every turn is trying to kill you, requires you to know what you are doing exactly and is punishing when you die. You will die often and repeatedly, the game is very old school in being unrelenting in what it throws at you. It took a lot of people by surprise and despite being nasty and brutal is actually quite a lot of fun. Mainly from the accomplishment you get when you finally beat something, admittedly then to fall prey to the next nasty thing around the corner, but still.
Now I see this trailer for Dark Souls, the sequel to that previous game. They are playing up the fact that you will die, a lot. It is nice to see a developer sticking to something that worked and putting out more. To give you an idea of what they are doing now though did you catch the freaking giant wolf holding a huge 20 foot long sword? *runs screaming away*

I did some programming
Shocking to hear me say that isn't it? A guy who programs for a living did some programming. Well this wasn't programming at work, this was programming at home, something I very rarely do. It was a very cool present my wife got me for my birthday, a programmable controller with motors and sensors in Lego. I built a few different things this weekend to try it out including a decent size robot who you could get to walk, talk, hold things, move towards or away from sensed objects etc. It is very cool indeed and I've spent some time looking for ideas on what to make it do or examples of other things people have done to build upon.
The language set within the built in program is a little limited but I've found a C like language that would work better for me so I'm going to poke around that and use it instead since programming by dragging and dropping icons is slow and annoying. I could then attempt something cool like this guy who made a rubik's cube solver and a sudoku solver. Honestly though I think I'll try to come up with some cat play thing using the laser pointer we have and some form or interactive motion sensor thing to see if I can control a cat and where it goes (evil laugh), mainly Daisy since she is the most hyper for laser pointers.

Even the simple things
Being with someone, especially someone you spend your whole life with, takes a lot of things. Small things, big things, things you really don't want to do, things you love doing, the whole kit and caboodle. Take this for instance, not this blog but this piece of text. Why is it here? Why am I writing this? There are two people in the whole universe who know why this is being written and one of them is me.
As I said if you want to be with someone every little thing counts. You may not always get them right, remember to do them or even be aware of them. You will do them though, you will enjoy every moment you spend with that other person even if at that particular moment things are glum or sad or angry. You still treasure them. Every little simple thing.

People never think
Work has not been fun so far today, people were working all weekend trying to finish the development work they should have finished weeks ago. Of course since this hasn't been done the code has not been tested fully since we can't run all the tests until all the development work is done. This means that things are found to be broken late in the release. Which means I get to fix shit again, stuff that was working that people break by not thinking.
Not only do they not think they simply are unable to work out why things were broken and what to do about it. If people simply thought logically about what they are doing it would be so much easier. Computers think very logically when you get down to it, they may not seem like they do but they do. There is always a logical reason for why they do something. If people get that in to their head and not come up with fancy illogical explanations for things just so they look like they know what they are doing.
Sometimes it is painful being clever :-|

More holiday stuff and food
Before going on to the holiday stuff again thought I would quickly mention something food related. Yesterday afternoon my wife fancied Indian food (tandoori chicken to be exact) for dinner so we went out to a local Indian restaurant tucked away in the corner of a strip mall in town. I had the chicken tikka masala, my wife her tandoori chicken and some naan bread. It was actually pretty damn good, a little bit spicy (not that much though, we only had the medium) but tons of flavour. We've never been huge fans of Indian food but this was very good, we must go again sometime.
Anyway, after that small diversion on to something else. As I briefly mentioned yesterday, my wife and I did get one day mostly to ourselves away from my parents. We simply explored the mountains and lakes in the area, visiting 3 different lakes if I recall correctly as well as driving all around mount bachelor just outside of Bend. We also did some good shopping in the morning. I think we could quite easily live somewhere near Bend, it is very spread out. The surprising thing is that it felt nowhere near as crowded as the place where we currently live despite the fact that the population of the two places is just about the same. If I could find work up there to support us I would move us there in an instant. Plenty of quiet areas around, not too many noisy people, lots of open space, real seasons including a summer which isn't too hot (it was 25 to 28 C every day we were there) and a surprising lack of chavs. It was really nice seeing my wife happy and relaxed on that one day we had alone up there (other than the driving there and back that is). If we lived around somewhere like that it makes me smile to think how happy she could be all the time.

A few more details
Since I didn't have much time this morning (and don't really right now to be honest) I'll give a few more details on what went on during my birthday holiday. My wife arranged all sorts of things for us to do and treated me extremely well during our time away. There was a custom made cake, helium filled balloons, specially made birthday breakfast, bottle of good champagne at dinner, you name it.
My parents (well my father really) was on "fine" form for the trip and managed to annoy us, especially my wife, but also my mother to no end during our time. The guy really needs to learn to chill a bit and not get worked up about stupid stuff like traffic. Also put the GPS down, there is no need to live by it.
I did get quite a few really good presents, especially from my wife. She got me a really good Lego set (there were a few) which has basically a programmable microcontroller, motors, sensors etc to build all sorts of robotic contraptions. I intent to have a good fiddle with it this weekend when I have a good amount of time free.
Speaking of my wife, she did something really brave. After surviving the white water rapids and losing her glasses she only had her sunglasses left. Despite this she still went on a moonlight canoe trip we had booked for one night. Literally in the dark but with a really bright moon in the sky we were rowing out over a lake for a couple of hours almost. She not only managed to deal with doing that in sunglasses she got over her fear of being on water in the dark. Really proud she managed to do that.
We saw an awful lot of nice scenery while we were in Oregon. Lots and lots of trees in that area. One of my birthday presents was a helicopter ride for 45 minutes up over the mountains and around the area. You could see so far from up there, some stunning views. We even drove up a gravel path to the top of a 10000ft mountain (well 9984 feet) and from up there you could see Oregon, Washington and California. Kind of cool for the west coast considering how spread out it is out here.
I want to write more to explain how much fun I had on this holiday but don't have time right now. I'll probably waffle about other parts during the next few days as they come to me. For now though I just need to make sure I get something similarly cool arranged for my wife's 40th birthday next year.

Well that was a long break
Been a while since I've put anything up here, mainly since I've been on holiday for my birthday. Everything went really well, only one real mishap that involved almost losing my wife but ended up only her losing her glasses and getting bashed about. I say mishap but at the time I was as worried as I've ever been since one moment my wife is there and the next she is gone. For reference we were white water rafting at the time and she was washed overboard in the roughest part of the water we went across that day. Other than seeing my wife in pain after surgery I've never been more worried about her. I really didn't know if I would see her again since once we knew she was gone we had no idea where she was. We couldn't see her at all in the water. It wasn't until a couple of minutes later when we saw her in the back of another raft that had picked up her on the way through that we knew she was ok. Very very wet and bashed about but alive.
With that I'll finish this post with one final thought. This blog has had more hits in the last two weeks when I've not been posting than it has ever had in a month. All for that particular Nigella post and mostly from India it seems. Strange how that goes.

I know where the time today is going
Not much work done at work today. Our source control server is having problems, problems that being on the phone to the support for the server software people for over 3 hours now and we still haven't got it back up. For a software engineer having no access to source control for your source code pretty much means you can't do any real code changes so we have lots of engineers trying to find other things to do right now.
Still, only another 3 hours and I get to go home. Productivity today is likely to stay at 0%.

Who keeps pinching the days?
I want you to fess up right now whomever you are. Someone out there is just taking days away now, they go by and I just don't notice the passage of time anymore. Take today for instance, I've been here at work for 7 hours now and I can barely remember doing stuff for what seemed like a couple of hours. Clearly someone is putting me in to a trance for long periods of time and making me miss it.
I want my time back dammit. It's not fair that almost 40 years have gone by already and I've probably got only that many left if I'm lucky. Shit.

Calming
I'm doing more and more Lego building recently. I find it extremely calming and relaxing just sifting through the pieces, finding the right bit and putting it in place. I spent a couple of hours yesterday afternoon building my latest purchase, a pretty huge jet plane. I don't care the Lego is meant to be a kids toy, I think everyone can be a kid mentally when they need to to forget about everything that goes on around them and just find that place that allows their mind to rest.
There is one thing that always does this for me, being with my wife. Not necessarily right there touching her but simply in the same house as her. Knowing that any time I can reach out and touch her, talk to her, let her know how much she means to me. Knowing that I can be there for her in the same way. Even when I am at work I have an IM client running so we can talk any time we want to, be in instant contact with each other so that we always feel connected to one another.
Shit and bad things may always happen around you but if you can find a person or persons who complete your life nothing else matters. Also if you can accept who you are and not care about what other people think about you life gets so much easier. It took me a while to realise that when I was younger but after meeting my wife I reached a point where I just didn't give a damn about what other people think. I live for my wife and I (plus the odd cat or four).
Now back to your regularly scheduled whatever you were doing to be happy and relaxed since everything else is just filler in life.

A phone call
Want to know what a phone call over the internet can look like? Consider that the following is simply the initial INVITE message which is basically the call offer. This doesn't show the extra messaging that goes on for codec negotiation, any call progress or ringing indication, when the call is actually answered and connected, when the call hangs up, when the call can be transferred etc. You get the idea. Anyway on to the message itself (this is the SIP protocol FYI).

Just thought I would show this since there is a lot more going on behind the scenes when you make that simple phone call that goes over the internet. BTW, most cell phones actually make calls that effectively go over the internet now from a protocol point of view, anything on 3G and above basically sets up a stream of data, no more fixed bandwidth lines.
Phones have come a long way in the last 100 years or so.

Cat Lord
There must be a title like that surely? You get cat lady so why not cat lord?
I think I would be one if I had the means to be. I adore out cats, which for someone who came from a household that never had cats and only ever had one dog is saying something. Cats are incredibly affectionate if you treat them properly. Play with them, fuss them, make sure they have what they need and want and they will love you completely. Even our more slightly aloof cats require some fuss and attention and act like big babies.
So there we go, I have another goal in life. Get people to start using the phrase Cat Lord as much as Cat Lady. Also note the lack of the crazy prefixed to that phrase.
