Dialogue

Over the last few days my wife and I have started rewatching Stargate Atlantis. It is a good show that got messed about with towards the end unnecessarily but we both really enjoyed it. After reaching almost half way through the second season it is clear for one very good reason why we like it so much. The characters actually have interesting dialogue between each other. Not just advance the plot worthy but they actually talk almost like normal people together. Sure some of it can be cheesy and over acted (especially in the beginning) but once the actors got used to their characters it all works together. Not to mention the glib one liners that some of the characters come out with that are genuinely funny.

It seems that so many TV programs get this basic fact wrong nowadays. Thinking about what TV programs that are currently showing the ones we enjoy best are the ones that get the verbal interactions between the characters right. Sure a decent story or concept works for a while but if the people in that story are boring and lifeless you wander away from it.

I think the only downside of watching it in HD like we are is that you can see some of the seams in the special effects, especially some of the green screen backgrounds in the first seasion, they can be completely static and obviously different from the many scenery and actors. Still it is cool to see something and go "we have that" when you see various props and stuff.

So to all TV people out there, write better dialogue please and more people might actually stick around to watch your show.
