I actually finished reading a book last night, one that I started reading this year. When I was younger I read a lot of books, so much so that part of our family weekly routine was to go to the library on the weekend. Even through university I was reading a lot although by that time it was more buying cheap second hand books than the local library. At my age now though I would rather spend my time playing a game than reading. Seeing the story visualised in front of me rather than having to picture it all in my head helps me concentrate on the actual story more I think.
So me actually finishing a book is a big deal to me. My wife still reads a hell of a lot of books, not physical books anymore obviously, and her collection in our library shows her years long habit of being able to read through a book in a day or two. It is amazing to me the rate at which she can absorb words and retell all the pertinent details later. Me I just can tell you the rough story of what happened whereas my wife can give you details about the who/what/why/where etc. Switch that to a videogame though and I could probably tell you various excruciating details that very few people I know actually care about. Yay differences in people.
Still wherever you get your entertainment there is something about it that sticks in your mind. I can still recall details of games I played where the story was actually decent and I had fun playing the game. Other ones which weren't that fun I tend to not remember the details so much even if the story is halfway decent. Same thing goes for books, I could probably tell you more about the stories of some I enjoyed reading that others that supposedly had better story telling. If they are boring or poorly told then you just won't recall them. Being traumatised by a book is not a way to get you to remember what happened. It needs to be interesting and entertaining to you. There is a reason "pulp fiction" as it were is popular. It is fun to read and you more often than not actually remember the overall story arc. Bet you not many people can actually tell you what happens in War and Peace.
So, more random waffling about something that popped in to my head today after realising I actually read a book this year. And yes I did say year, quite a few years of the last decade I've not actually read a book. Played lots and lots of games though.
