A new trailer for GTA5 came out today and it reminded me a lot of why I enjoy those games. The big sprawling open world games like GTA3/Vice City/San Andres, like Red Dead Redemption, also Oblivion and Skyrim, Fallout 3, I could go on with a large list. They are the kind of games where you can just go see what is around. Sure there are fixed missions with places to go but the act of just looking around and finding what is in this world that has been created is immensely fun.
Sure I play games that are linear and have fixed paths. They can be fun too but more often than not they don't last long enough. For real time spent give me the big world to poke around in. GTA4 fell down in that department. I didn't play the main game just the side stories released separately. They were apparently much more interesting than the main game story so it seems I got the good side out of that game. Its failures though were that it restricted you to where you could go too much until late in to the game and a lot of the gameplay mechanisms of traveling around where just not fun.
So here's hoping there are more games that get the formula right. With a game like that I can play it for months on end getting everything done and seeing all there is in the world. Far more game for the money than some other games for sure.
On that thought lets see how long before I give up with work and moving us to somewhere that my wife and I can poke around in and not bump in to other people. Not long now I think.
