New TV

Well the new TV turned up and was set up with no problems yesterday. It is a little weird, it is a larger screen but since the bulk of the TV is less it feels smaller. The screen is much better than the old one though and things really show their true colour and resolution well. Now we just need to get used to the higher refresh rate and motion smoothing. It makes things look a little too realistic sometimes but maybe we can fiddle with it and get the advanced settings down right. With it as it is though it should last us just as long if not longer than the last TV we had which actually we used for longer than any other TV we've ever had. Seems strange that we used it for 7 years.

As an aside though, playing through the first chapter of Heretic more yesterday it was very obvious how games have improved graphical quality wise over the years. Even on a 15 inch laptop screen the resolution is so relatively low you can see every single pixel in the game. It can be a little jarring but the game plays wonderfully all these years later. Not to mention it loads up in less than a second since there is so little to actually load up. It makes it so much easier to use compared to when I first played it in the last millennium (another scary thought).

Now I just need to play some of my old games on the new TV and see how they look. Especially if I can find the few that actually run in 1080p as opposed to 720p that most games drop down to in order to keep the frame rate up. I wonder though how standard definition TV is going to look on it, hopefully some of the newer signal processing technologies in the TV can make up for the severe lack in quality of an SD signal. That and the amazon prime streaming my wife and I use to watch some things.

I was about to end this blog post like I do a lot of mine, some form of "anyway ...." but for now I think I'll just end it here and go look outside to see what the weather is doing. Meant to be lots of rain around here for the next few days although I did get to work before it really picked up this morning. I want to see how wet the drive home is going to be today so that I can prepare for the other California drivers on the road that seriously can't deal with water on the road.
